One of the finest book-to-film adaptations is The Hustler. Walter Tevis wrote a fine novel, but the screen adaptation by Robert Rossner was extraordinary. An intense, gripping character study (Newman, Scott, Laurie), the perfectly written arc of Fast Eddie Felson's transformation was astonishing.
